Baby feeding log: what to record

The time and amount help you check the last bottle and review the day. The right kind of record depends on how your baby feeds.

After several feeds or a night waking, it can be hard to remember the last bottle clearly. A feeding log keeps the details available when you or another caregiver need them.

Choose a consistent way to record feeds. Each entry should still make sense the following day.

Record the amount actually drunk

For a bottle feed, note the time, amount drunk and milk type. If milk is left in the bottle, record what your baby drank rather than the amount prepared.

Pola has separate fields for expressed breast milk and formula in the same entry. For example, 40 ml of expressed milk plus 60 ml of formula makes a 100 ml entry. This illustrates the form; it is not a suggested portion.

Adding a feed in the Pola app: separate amounts of breast milk and formula, and the timeBreast milk and formula are two separate amounts in one entry.

Breastfeeding needs a different record

For feeding directly at the breast, you can keep the time, side and duration in a notebook or phone note if those details are useful to you or requested by a professional. Duration does not measure milk intake.

Pola's current feeding form records milk amounts. It has no breastfeeding timer or side selector. Do not guess a volume to fill in the form.

Keep the history in one place

Paper, phone notes and an app can all work. Agree where records belong and what each entry means. If you add a feed later, use the time of the feed rather than the time you opened the form.

For shared care, a journal both caregivers can access can help.

Review the recorded day

Pola's Today screen shows logged milk and a next-feed countdown. Goals and reminders help organize records; they are not individual feeding advice.

The feeding journal is free. A PDF report in Pola Plus can combine the selected feeding history with sleep and nappies.

The totals reflect recorded feeds. Missing entries mean the summary does not represent the whole day.
